Musical Paintings

For many years, I have been working with musical theme’s and subjects for my paintings. Often inspired by concerts I attended, concerts I was particularly moved and captured by, music relating to the strivings of human lives towards the eternal transformed into sound, the structures of emotion we can identify as our own. The paintings indicated as Musical Paintings are based on specific Concerts or Symphonies but are created afterwards, as a recollection of the experience, in my own time, as studio paintings in oil on canvas. They are painted not in the duration of the music-time, but in the course of some days, or weeks or months. Also here, it is a process of internalizing and recalling an impact or an atmosphere, and for me it requires intense study of the notes, the sheet music or score, listening to recordings afterwards, reading about the structure of the composition, the life of the composer, immersing myself in the time it was written, find his contemporary painters, poets etc.

And from that to a vision of my own.
